ci è gradito anzitutto inviare un cordiale ringraziamento a tutti i partecipanti al L Incontro di Studiosi dell’Antichità Cristiana a nome dell’Augustinianum e del Comitato organizzativo (J.A. Suárez Izquierdo); quanto al prossimo Incontro, vi annunciamo che si terrà nei giorni 7-8 maggio 2026 e verterà sul tema:
Il cristianesimo, i popoli, le culture.
Aspetti e problemi dell’inculturazione del cristianesimo nei primi secoli (I-IX).
Ogni esperienza religiosa è vissuta da uomini concreti, collocati nello spazio e nel tempo della storia, vale a dire all’interno delle culture dei popoli. Questo aspetto, valido in generale, assume un rilievo particolare nell’esperienza biblica e cristiana, profondamente radicata nella storia. La Bibbia è stata ed è considerata dai fedeli parola di Dio espressa attraverso parole umane. La fede, in quanto risposta alla rivelazione, si realizza nell’esperienza umana attraverso un processo di inculturazione che non è soltanto un adattamento esteriore, ma un dialogo, un’assimilazione e uno scambio vitale con le culture in cui essa prende forma.
La mediazione della rivelazione biblico-cristiana nella cultura greca costituì il primo di questi incontri. Già nel giudaismo alessandrino e poi nel primo pensiero cristiano, la fede semitica fu espressa in categorie greche, anche attraverso conflitti di adattamento o opposizione. La strutturazione gerarchica della Chiesa, i rapporti con l’Impero e la definizione dogmatica operata dai Concili del IV-V secolo resero sempre più “naturali” i profondi processi di inculturazione legati all’evangelizzazione di Oriente e Occidente, percepiti quasi come inevitabili. L’Incontro intende affrontare il tema proposto nella trattazione che ad esso hanno riservato gli autori dell’antichità cristiana, con riferimento ai seguenti ambiti di ricerca:
1) esegesi e traduzione dei testi biblici e patristici;
2) la grande diffusione delle lingue orientali nel cristianesimo tardoantico;
3) le influenze filosofiche sulla riflessione patristica e sulla dogmatizzazione teologica;
4) la ritualità liturgica;
5) le rappresentazioni dell’arte;
6) cultura e politica del diritto;
7) la religiosità popolare.
È importante che i singoli temi siano elaborati in rapporto stretto e diretto con il tema indicato. Riprendere lo studio dell’inculturazione della fede nell’antichità può aiutarci a ripensare, nel contesto globale attuale, il rapporto tra cristianesimo e culture, unendo unità e pluralità nel rispetto delle diversità.
Tutti coloro che desiderano partecipare all’Incontro 2026 con una comunicazione (15 minuti) o con una relazione (25 minuti) sono pregati di inviare il titolo insieme con una breve sintesi dell’intervento ed il proprio curriculum sintetico entro il 30 novembre 2025 esclusivamente al seguente indirizzo e-mail: convegnomaggio@patristicum.org
Il Comitato scientifico si riunirà agli inizi del mese di gennaio 2026 e valuterà le proposte giunte, comunicando entro la fine di febbraio gli esiti della valutazione.

I contributi consegnati non dovranno superare le 30.000 battute (spazi inclusi) per le comunicazioni e le 50.000 battute (spazi inclusi) per le relazioni.

Suárez Izquierdo). We are pleased to announce that the next meeting will take place on 7-8 May 2026 and will be dedicated to the theme:
Christianity, Peoples, Cultures.
Aspects and Issues of the Inculturation of Christianity in the Early Centuries
(1st-9th centuries)
Every religious experience is lived by concrete individuals situated in space and time – that is, within the cultures of peoples. This general truth assumes particular importance in the biblical and Christian experience, which is profoundly rooted in history. Holy Scripture has been – and continues to be – regarded by believers as the Word of God expressed through human language. Faith, as a response to revelation, is realised in human experience through a process of inculturation which is not merely an external adaptation, but a vital dialogue, assimilation, and exchange with the cultures in which it takes form.
The mediation of biblical-Christian revelation within Greek culture marked the first of these encounters. Already in the context of Alexandrian Judaism, and subsequently in early Christian thought, the Semitic faith was articulated using Greek philosophical categories – sometimes in harmony, sometimes through tension and conflict. The hierarchical structure of the Church, its relationship with the Empire, and the dogmatic definitions established by the Councils of the 4th and 5th centuries progressively “naturalized” more and more these processes of inculturation, particularly in the context of evangelisation in both East and West, where such developments were increasingly perceived as inevitable.
The aim of the conference is to explore the proposed theme as it was addressed by authors of early Christianity, with reference to the following areas of research:
– Exegesis and translation of biblical and patristic texts
– The widespread use of Eastern languages in Late Antique Christianity
– Philosophical influences on patristic thought and theological dogmatization
– Liturgical rituality
– Artistic representations
– Legal culture and political structures
– Popular religiosity
It is important that each proposed contribution maintains a clear and direct connection to the overarching theme. Revisiting the question of the inculturation of faith in antiquity may help us reframe the relationship between Christianity and culture in today’s global context, seeking unity and plurality in a spirit of respectful diversity.
Those who wish to participate in the 2026 meeting with either a short paper (15 minutes) or a plenary lecture (25 minutes) are kindly asked to submit their proposed title, a brief abstract, and a short academic CV by 30 November 2025, exclusively via the following email address: convegnomaggio@patristicum.org
The scientific Committee will meet in early January 2026 to review the submissions, and participants will be informed of the outcome by the end of February.
